After I asked the last question in a “murder board” prep session, the executive with decades of press experience had one for me—would I get on an airplane in five days and be there to support a global announcement? Because the 60 minutes we spent together demonstrated my skill in preparing executives for high-stakes, high-visibility engagements where everything has to go right. I do the homework that enables busy leaders to scan and absorb at-a-glance messaging and ask all the questions—be they obviously hard, seemingly innocuous, or downright stupid, so the executive is completely ready to step into the spotlight and perform.

I know the organization, but I don’t know who’s leading it. That’s something no CEO wants to hear—but it’s what we heard when consulting with one client, and quickly created a plan in response.
